Axios is the Greek word for “worthy”. Axios literally means “weighing as much as”. It is a word that is designed to bring an image to our mind. And that image is that of a balancing scale.
Paul is exhorting the church in Ephesus “to live a life WORTHY of the calling you have received.”
On one side of this balancing scale is God’s calling. On the other side is our living. Paul is painting a profound picture of the Christian life.
The call of God that we have received in heavy. Heavy with life, with love, with grace, with goodness, with purpose, with hope, with joy. The call we have received is to actually receive God Himself- in us and with us.
The question is:
Is our life heavy with the life of God?
Does our living balance with the calling we have received?
Are we living the life to which we have been summoned?
Are we, in all reality, being the people God has called us to be?
A scale is a dynamic thing. Constantly prone to change. Never fully at rest. Always seeking balance. So it is with following Jesus- dynamic, changing, exciting. Always seeking to live into this wonderful, heavy life.
